Storyline

The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) normally showcases smarter options to all sectors of life, but at this year's show that concluded on Friday, one hot area is the sport technology.

The world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather released a VR boxing workout system at the show that gave him an opportunity to take on himself in the world of virtual reality and have trainers ultimately get a chance to go toe-to-toe with the VR champ.

"Essentially you are learning throughout each class how Floyd knocked out each of his different opponents," said James Williams, CEO of Mayweather Boxing plus Fitness.

Some exercisers tried hard to beat the undefeated champion in the virtual world, while Williams said that was impossible.

"We made his character impossible to hit, in the same way in real life, you need to make it true to life as possible," said Williams.

Actually, some new products on display are not just for showcasing their edge-cutting technology, and some have been used in the real-life sport training. A reaction test system developed by Fitlight is a typical example.

"Almost every NBA team has a system, almost NFL, NHL, so all the big teams in the big league they have a system. To give an example, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, he uses our system, we're very proud of that,"said Bob Bouw, sales representative of Fitlight.

Meanwhile, the gamified testing is also being used to take on serious problems that plague athletics like concussions.

The Reflexion Edge System, which can actually be folded up into a backpack, measures one's hand-eye coordination, peripheral vision and lateral precision.

The results are used as a baseline. Suppose an athlete suspects that he has a concussion, he can do more tests to compare.

"We are giving athletic trainers the information they need in order to make the call. They know how to determine, I know this athlete, I can take into account the fact their peripheral vision and their depth perception are a lot lower today, they were playing in the game, they had a few hits. I know this isn't normal for them," Matthew Campagna, co-founder and CEO of Reflexion.

Regular testing also helps improve coordination - a sign that technology is giving a boost to both the mental and physical aspects of the game.
