Four rescuers brought back the bodies of two missing crew members and the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) from a burning oil tanker off the coast of Shanghai on Saturday.
The Panama-registered oil tanker SANCHI, carrying 136,000 tonnes of light crude oil from Iran, has been burning since it collided with the CF Crystal, a Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter, about 160 nautical miles east of the Yangtze River estuary in Shanghai on Jan. 6.
Thirty-two crew members were onboard of the tanker at the time of the collision, 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis and only one body were recovered on Jan.8. Meanwhile, all 21 crew members on the bulk freighter -- all Chinese nationals -- were rescued.
At 08:37 Saturday, four rescuers, with the help of a crane vessel, were lifted and dropped onto the deck of SANCHI where they found two bodies. The rescuers did not find any other missing crew members but were able to access the control room and took back the VDR.
They also unsuccessfully attempted to enter the living area located on the first floor, but were deterred by the extreme temperature that has reached 89 degrees Celsius.
As the wind kept pushing toxic smoke to the rear of the tanker, the rescuers returned the rescue vessel with the two bodies and the VDR at 09:03.
A total of 13 vessels from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea are currently engaged in the rescue work.
