Storyline

Various kinds of animals are enjoying a comfortable winter in a zoo in Dalian City of northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The giant panda Fei Yun, who lives in the zoo, seems unaffected by the cold weather in winter. In fact, she was enjoying the cool and refreshing air when she is doing some stretches and rolling on the ground outside. But, unlike Fei Yun, her panda friends who remain indoors prefer to stay still.

"Giant pandas are a kind of animal relatively resistant to low temperature, but can't stand the heat. Generally, they don't feel uncomfortable if the temperature is above minus 10 degrees Celsius. However we will change each giant panda's playground according to different weather conditions, for health reasons," said Xu Cong, a breeder with the Dalian Forest Zoo.

Except for giant pandas, giraffes coming from Africa and the monkeys have to stay indoors through winter, breathing the warm air from the heating systems. Meanwhile, the zoo staff have laid dry grass on the floor for the monkeys, to create a rather comfortable environment.

"We have provided various heating equipment including underfloor heating and air-conditioners, to keep the temperatures suitable for each kind of animals," said Xiao Wei, another breeder in the zoo.

In order to help the animals resist the cold, the zoo has adjusted the ingredients of their food for more calories.

"For predators, we are adding more protein and fat in beef or mutton. For omnivorous primates, we are adding more starch in their food. This can help them resist the cold," Xiao mentioned.
