Storyline

Tens of thousands of women on Saturday gathered in city streets across the United States on the anniversary of U.S. President Donald Trump's inauguration to encourage more women to participate in politics.

The main event for the 2018 Women's March, entitled "Power to the Polls", will take place Sunday in Las Vegas, with hundreds of other marches and events being held in a dozen cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles over the weekend.

In Washington D.C., tens of thousands of women as well as men appeared at the march to encourage more women to run for office, to call for equal rights and to be themselves. Over the past year, the number of female politicians in both local and federal levels created a new high in history.

"This is so impacting this year, we have so many women that are running for office, and because of that, we are here to show our support and to get more people to run for office," said a marcher.

Another important goal for many Democratic Party supporters in the crowd is to call on people to vote for the Democrats during the mid-term election this November, so that they can take the majority of the seats in congress.

"I think democrats have a good chance to take over a lot of traditionally Republican areas," said a marcher.

This year's Women's March is the second of its kind. The first march took place last year on the second day of Trump's inauguration.
