Storyline

A U.S. decision to impose safeguards and steep tariffs on imported solar products and washers not only harms the industries' healthy development, but further exacerbates a difficult global trade environment, China's Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday.

Wang Hejun, head of the ministry's trade remedies and investigation bureau, told a press conference that the U.S. decision is an abuse of trade remedy measures.

"This safeguard is different from anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures, as the exporter making no improper commercial activities, nor having no subsidies or dumping. It is made just because the imported products impact the U.S. domestic industries," said Wang.

Wang said the decision overprotects U.S sectors and goes against the industries' healthy development around the world.

"The export of China's photovoltaic products to the U.S. has sharply declined, with the value of exports having dropped from 1.6 billion U.S. dollars to the current 600 million dollars. And the export of large washing machines to the U.S. has mainly stopped after the anti-dumping measure," said Wang.

Wang said the global economic recovery remains fragile, which requires joint efforts and actions from all countries.

He said China would work with other WTO members to defend their interests.

U.S. President Donald Trump will impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on imported washers for the next three years and of up to 30 percent on solar cells and modules for the next four years, said the Office of the United States Trade Representative in a statement Monday.
