Storyline

A cold front is sweeping through north China, bringing snow and reducing temperatures to minus 40 degrees Celsius in some areas.

In north China's Hebei Province, residents living in Xingtai City were greeted with a light sprinkling of snow after waking up early Tuesday morning.

A total of 0.6 millimeters of snow rained down in urban areas from around 05:00 to 11:00. Meanwhile, local temperatures dropped to minus nine degrees Celsius.

Although minus nine degrees Celsius is rather cold, some areas in north China had it even worse due to the frigid, cold front. For instance, in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, citizens are going through a very rough period of extremely cold weather.

In the Greater Khingan Mountains area region, a low of minus 43.7 degree Celsius was recorded on Tuesday morning in Huma County; this was the lowest temperature recorded in the last 20 years.

The cold front also triggered foggy weather in Huma on Tuesday as well, as a result, all the vehicles on the road had to reduce their speeds.

The local road administration and sanitation department worked together to clear the snow from the roads.

The extreme weather also affected nearby Huzhong District, with the temperature dropping to minus 47.7 degrees Celsius on that same day, breaking the 1981 record for the coldest day in the district.

Foggy weather also reduced the visibility there to less than 50 meters.

Despite the severe cold, the passion that tourists to the north have to go and explore is still very much burning bright, especially that of those from the southern areas of China.

"It is really extremely cold here. The coldness is beyond our imagination. I just had a little experiment where I threw water into the air and it immediately turned into ice. It is really cold," said Qin Dongyu, a tourist from Hunan.

The weather department in Heilongjiang Province predicted that the temperature will continue to drop further in the next few days.

The far-reaching cold front has also hit northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The temperature in Kuitun City plummeted to this winter's lowest point of minus 26 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning. Local residents were all warmly dressed to resist the cold.

"I didn't wear a hat before, but I am wearing one now. It's probably the coldest day since the beginning of winter," said Liu Shixiang.

The meteorological department in Kuitun issued a blue alert on Tuesday morning, forecasting that the extreme weather will last until the end of January.
