Storyline

The focus of the war in Syria has shifted from anti-terrorism to a power tussle between countries in the region, an Israeli expert said on Sunday.

Ehud Yaari, a political commentator for an Israeli TV network, made the remarks one day after the outbreak of the largest conflict between Israel and Syria since the Lebanon War in 1982.

Although the conflict is thought to have escalated after Syrian forces shot down an Israeli fighter jet that was striking on “Iranian drone bases” in Syria, Yaari believes that the confrontation was actually instigated between Israel and Iran, who he said triggered the conflict by flying a drone into Israel’s airspace.

"What you had yesterday was the first direct confrontation between Israel and Iran over Syrian territory. Now that the main part of the war against IS is coming to an end, what you will have now in Syria is the post-IS war, which has begun probably yesterday,” said Yaari.

He added that unlike Russia, who set up a “hotline” with Israel to avoid clashes with the latter in Syrian airspace, Iran sent a drone into Israel’s airspace just one day before it marked the 39th anniversary of the victory of its Islamic revolution to demonstrate its military presence in the region, and the action will lead to more clashes between the two countries in the future.

"You will see more clashes between Israelis and the Iranians on Syrian territory, because Israel set its red lines and Israel is not about to accept that Iran becomes militarily our next-door neighbor," said Yaari.

Meanwhile, Mai Asami, a journalist with Japan’s Jiji Press, believes that Israel, Syria and Iran are unlikely to get themselves involved in a full-scale conflict at present, and says Israel was seeking to retaliate for its downed jet.

"If you listen to the radio of the Arabic countries, like Syria, everywhere, they are like kind of singing, praising the victory. So this image is going to be [disseminated] everywhere, that's like what the Israeli government doesn't want to see actually. This is [what] I think Netanyahu is going to deal with from now on," said Asami.

On the other hand, Asami believes Iran will continue to expand its influence in the region.

"The purpose of [the] Iranian regime is to make the "cresent", like the zone of the Shiah zone, from Iran to the Mediterranean Sea," she said.
