Storyline

Organizers of the upcoming Chinese 2018 Spring Festival Gala hope to add a canine flavor to the world's most watched television show with a charismatic performance of adorable doggies and a smart robot dog, as 2018 marks the Year of the Dog.

Amateur dog trainer Qiao Maiyuan has been invited to perform on stage along with his team of six poodles for the China Central Television (CCTV) extravaganza, which has become an annual television fixture for Chinese families on the eve of the Lunar New Year since 1983.

The six well-drilled dogs are expected to show off their discipline and agility to entertain the audience with their poses on stage.

Qiao, who works as a security guard at a shopping mall in central China's Henan Province, said that while he trains his dogs hard to master their routines, he loves them like they were his own children.

"I'm not professional. I just love dogs, so I treat them as my children. It's the Year of the Dog, so I take my 'children' to come to the Spring Festival Gala. I never thought I could take to such a large stage. It makes me so excited and joyful," he said.

Among the other festive acts lined up are children dressed as dogs and chickens, with their costumes signifying the changeover from the Year of the Rooster to the Year of the Dog.
