The North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO)will establish two new command centers in the United States and Germany to upgrade the alliance's command structure for the first time since the Cold War ends, said a NATO official Tuesday in Brussels, Belgium.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made the announcement at a press conference ahead of a defense ministers meeting held from Wednesday to Thursday.
According to Stoltenberg, the new command center in the United States will be responsible for maritime security in the Atlantic, whereas the one in Germany will focus on improving mobility within Europe.
During this week's meetings, the ministers will also address other issues including fair burden-sharing, cooperation with the Europan Union (EU), and the alliance's role in fighting terrorism.
Stoltenberg also stressed that the main subject discussed at the meeting will still be the member countries' expenditure on national defense. It is estimated that in 2018, the defense expenditure of eight member countries will reach the standard, accounting for two percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
