Storyline

Aging giant pandas at the Dujiangyan base in southwest China’s Sichuan Province consider themselves lucky to be constantly under expert medical supervision.

Staff at this giant panda base make sure they do everything needed to keep these old bears healthy by offering routine medical check-ups among other things.

Giant panda Yue Yue is 25 now, but looks healthy as ever - thanks to the special 'nursing home'. Besides Yue Yue, the nursing home looks after nine other senior giant pandas who are over the age of 20.

For the breeders responsible for their check-ups, however, it’s not an easy task after all - especially when it comes to keeping them calm and comfortable.

On Wednesday, as Yue Yue got ready for her tests, her breeders kept her distracted throughout the procedure. While one breeder continuously kept feeding her freshly cut apples, another one managed to finish dental-check, measure her weight and even draw blood sample.

The panda hospital has different functions - offering daily health care being the most important one, explained Wang Chengdong, director of the panda hospital.

"The hospital is also used to conducting emergency rescue for some wild giant pandas as well as their companion animals. The third one is to keep animals in quarantine," Wang added.

In addition to providing daily health care service, the hospital also houses a laboratory for conducting genetics tests and gather relevant data around disease prevention.

As it turns out, the panda base is not just about medical care - it’s well equipped with necessary cooking facilities for dishing up nutritious food to these senior giant pandas; and steamed corn breads often add up to their regular fruit diet.
