Various of intangible cultural heritage performances were staged in the 1,800-year-old Gongtan Ancient Town in southwest China during the Spring Festival holiday.
Located in the Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, the Gongtan Ancient Town boasts a long history and rich cultural resources.
The town welcomed more than 5,000 visitors who came to appreciate the original folk activities on Sunday.
The most thrilling performance was the "climbing on mountain of machetes", during which a local villager, who is a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor stepped on 26 sharp machetes tied onto a tall pole with his bare feet.
Not far from him, were more subdued performances with villagers doing the "Baishou Dance" and singing "Haocao Haozi." Both the dance and the songs are part of China's intangible cultural heritage in which they send their best wishes for the coming year and with gestures reflecting on their history and daily life activities.
In 2017, the Gongtan Ancient Town was elected as the ten most popular towns among Chinese net users.
