Storyline

An advertising agency in Thailand has developed a "smart vest" that could turn stray dogs into guardians of Bangkok's streets and alleyways.

According to estimates, there are now more than eight million stray dogs in Thailand, with 800,000 in Bangkok alone.

"Thai people take care of stray dogs out of a sense of mercy. They feed them but have no understanding about neutering them and there’s no law to control them," said Dayin Petcharat from SOS Animals Thailand, a local charity organization.

But Pakornkrit Khantaprab, a member of advertising agency Cheil Thailand's creative team, decided to do more than just feed the strays.

He invented a vest that can be fitted to stray dogs, transforming them from unwanted pests into security guards.

"The inspiration of this idea came from the news that we all saw in Thailand or in pretty much everywhere, that you can see stray dogs being mistreated. Sometimes they are abandoned on the streets, and people just neglect dogs," said Khantaprab.

Equipped with a hidden video camera, the vest has sensors that transmit live streaming videos when the dog barks, showing what the dog sees via a mobile phone and computer application.

The algorithm of its voice detection module can detect a warning bark and turn the camera on.

Dogs have proven themselves expert in detecting unwanted visitors or potential thieves. Other threats that humans might not observe, such as snakes, are easily detected by dogs.

Cheil Thailand thought smart vests could help both the dogs and the community. Now they're hoping to sell the system to local communities and possibly police forces.
