Storyline

China, along with other insider countries of the South China Sea, is willing and able to make rules on their own, with more multiple regional cooperation expected, said the Chinese foreign minister on Thursday.

Wang Yi, the foreign minister, made the remarks at a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing first session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), in response to a question related to the prevailing calm in the South China Sea and the region's anticipated Code of Conduct (COC).

"When it comes to maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea, China's resolve is as strong as its commitment is firm. China's approach to the South China Sea issue is a responsible one by taking into account interests of the Chinese people, the facts of history, imperatives of regional peace and international rules of law. This position is firm and consistent," Wang said.

He continued to say that the situation in the South China Sea is turning for the better, and there is a golden opportunity for China and ASEAN countries.

"China and ASEAN countries all agreed to draft the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea to preserve its hard-won tranquility. Several days ago, China and ASEAN officials held an inaugural round of consultation on the text and made encouraging progress. Plus, they agreed to hold at least three more rounds for the remainder of this year," said the minister.

"China and ASEAN countries are willing and able to draft regional rules on our own. The rules will meet our regions' imperatives and be adhered to by all," he added.

According to Wang, some outsiders still try to stir up troubles and meddle in the waters. In the year ahead, China will work with ASEAN countries to seize the opportunity, broaden cooperation, prevent interference, and overcome challenges, he said.

"Cherishing what we have achieved together, China and ASEAN countries will speed up the COC consultation, explore a mechanism of cooperation among the coastal states, and promote peace and cooperation in the South China Sea," Wang said.
