Storyline

The Chinese government's measures to push forward tax cuts in 2018 will benefit startup enterprises, stimulate consumption and improve people's well-being, said the director of the State Administration of Taxation on Tuesday.

Wang Jun, the director, made the remarks in an interview after attending the fourth plenary meeting of the first session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC).

Wang first reviewed the positive results of the tax-cut measures taken by the State Council in the past five years. He said that these measures have effectively promoted sound economic growth.

He then said the tax-related contents in this year's government work report delivered by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang have three unique features.

First and foremost, the government has attached unprecedented importance to tax-cut measures this year, according to Wang.

"Tax-related contents count 31 pieces in the government work report. Among them 18 measures are about pushing forward tax cuts and reforms this year. This is the first time that tax-related contents have accounted for such a large part in the government work report. It carries a lot of weight and is of great force," he said.

The measures will benefit China's economic growth and people's well-being, said Wang as he went on to cite the other two features.

"The second feature is wide coverage. The tax reform will benefit nearly a hundred million natural persons and tens of millions of enterprises. Its third feature is clear direction. The focus will be on easing tax burden in the sectors of manufacturing and transport, promoting economic transition and upgrading, easing tax burden of small and micro-sized enterprises and wage-earning class, and encouraging entrepreneurship, stimulating consumption and improving people’s well-being," said Wang.
