Storyline

The U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 caused irreparable trauma in the country that people are still dealing with 15 years later.

Sadr City in northeast Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, became one of the regions known for the fiercest resistance to U.S. occupation since it began in 2004.

Majed, an Iraqi citizen, and his family lived in Sadr City then; they were frequent witnesses to the conflicts there. Specifically, a military operation of the U.S. forces conducted on April 7, 2008, tragically sucked the family into the war.

"On that day, the U.S. armored vehicle came from this direction. It was at 21:00. The power was off that night. Many people were sitting outside their houses then. Suddenly, the U.S. forces started shooting at the crowds in that direction. But there was no resistance. No one was armed. No one had shot at them," he said.

Majed's brother unfortunately fell victim to this attack.

"We stood at the door. We, my brother and I, heard the noise of armored vehicles coming, so we ran home. My brother was behind me. At that time, the gunshots began. A bullet hit him in his head," said Majed.

Majed said that his brother died immediately before crying out.

"My brother was dead immediately because the bullet pierced his skull. The hole left on this side was very small while there was a big hole on the other side. His face seemed to be normal, but I still can't stand to look at the other side," he said.

Majed's brother's death was a fatal blow to the family, especially to his aged parents and young son.

"My brother lay at the door, right in front of us. His parents and brother, moreover especially his children, were all there. He lay in front of us. All the people were dumbfounded with no consciousness. The bullet was a bigger blow to me," he said.

Worst still, Majed said that they received no apology or compensation from the U.S. forces, nor even a basic investigation behind the shooting.

The Iraq War broke out in 2003 and ended in 2011 with the withdrawal of U.S. forces. The country was left in a state of chaos and with many facing mental distress.
