Storyline

A multi-track air route connecting Lhasa and Chengdu in southwest China was officially put into use on Wednesday after test operation since March 1.

It is expected to enhance the airspace capacity along the line by about 85 percent and bring real benefits to the Tibet Autonomous Region.

"Many fruits are from Hainan, and the tomatoes are from Shandong, all produced in different places. Some other fruits like cherries are transported over by plane," said a fruit vendor in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

Apart from bringing in fresh fruits, the increased airspace capacity will also fly in more tourists and help increase tourism income of the local people.

Baima, a Tibetan-style restaurant owner, is full of hope about his business with the ever-improving transport system.

"Now there are more and more tourists in Tibet. With the convenient transport and more tourists, the business is getting better and better year after year," he said.

He told the reporter that with more flights along the multi-track Lhasa-Chengdu air route, he plans to run a branch in Chengdu, the capital of neighboring Sichuan Province.

"My plan is to run a branch in Chengdu. There are many flights from Lhasa to Chengdu, and the daily income would be quite good. We can transport some fresh vegetables directly from Lhasa to Chengdu in a very short period and get them used very quickly," Baima said.

Statistics show Tibet received more than 25.6 million tourists in 2017, with tourism industry revenues reaching 37.94 billion yuan, or 22.1 percent of the region's GDP. It has hence become an important strategy to further promote air traffic next.

"By the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2020), the airport network in Tibet will be further improved with substantially enhanced capacity. There will be 95 direct routes and flights to 49 cities. The annual passenger volume will reach seven million and the goods volume 56,000 tons. The planes landing and departing here will reach 72,000," said Liu Wei, deputy director of the Tibet Autonomous Region Administration of the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
