European Council President Donald Tusk on Thursday called for dialogue with the United States to avert global protectionism.
He made the remarks during a press conference following the first day of the EU's spring summit meeting in Brussels, Belgium.
The United States is set to begin charging import duties of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum from Friday. But it has chosen to "pause" the imposition of metals tariffs for a number of economies, including the EU.
Tusk told reporters that the European Commission is still waiting for Washington to confirm that decision.
"We need to avoid protectionism at the global level. This is a major risk for jobs, not only in Europe. In this respect, dialogue with the U.S. is key," said Tusk.
The leaders of the 28-nation EU on Thursday discussed topics including digital tax, measure to have firms with global annual revenue in excess of 750 million euros to pay a three percent on digital revenue earned in Europe.
Tusk revealed that the second day of the summit will discuss the draft agreement on Brexit transition.
