2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"The saying of the relevant person in the United States is apparently arrogant, who misjudged the situation and has completely underestimated China's resolution and ability to defend its legitimate interests and rights, as well as the price the United States must pay for its willful and reckless act."

4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"We have emphasized many times that the nature of China-U.S. economic and trade relations features mutually-benefit and win-win results. A very simple example is that, by importing large amounts of low-cost and labor-intensive products from China, the United States greatly reduced the cost of the U.S. consumers and enhanced the consumer surplus. This has actually improved the benefits of the U.S. consumers and is macroscopically helpful in curbing the U.S. inflation. Therefore either it is from the micro level or the macro level, the U.S. benefits greatly. Therefore, the US's insistence on pushing forward the Section 301 investigation, releasing the so-called verdict and provoking the trade war will undoubtedly, primarily and directly harm the interests of the U.S. consumers, companies and enterprises and the financial market."

6. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
As you can see, all the three major US stock indexes have fallen following the signing of the Memorandum, which is a vote of no confidence to relevant wrong policies and moves of the US side by the financial market, and it also sheds light on the international community's concerns over relevant reckless and dangerous policies and actions taken by the US side."

8. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"Regarding whether China will retaliate, we have stated our position multiple times lately and the message has been got across very clearly. It's impolite not to make a return for what one receives, and we will fight to the end. We hope that the US side will take China's stance seriously, act with ration and caution, and do not be penny wise and pound foolish, which will hurt itself and others as well."

Storyline

China will take resolute countermeasures against the U.S. willful and reckless act as "it is impolite not to reciprocate," spokeswoman for Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hua Chunying said Friday.

Hua made the remarks in response to Director of White House National Trade Council Peter Navarro's saying that China benefits much more than the United States in the bilateral trade, and that it is very hard for China to make retaliatory decisions against the U.S. decision to hike tariffs on China's steel and aluminum imports.

"The saying of the relevant person in the United States is apparently arrogant, who misjudged the situation and has completely underestimated China's resolution and ability to defend its legitimate interests and rights, as well as the price the United States must pay for its willful and reckless act," said Hua at a routine news briefing in Beijing.

China has emphasized many times that the nature of China-U.S. economic and trade relations features mutually-benefit and win-win results, Hua said.

"A very simple example is that, by importing large amounts of low-cost and labor-intensive products from China, the United States greatly reduced the cost of the U.S. consumers and enhanced the consumer surplus. This has actually improved the benefits of the U.S. consumers and is macroscopically helpful in curbing the U.S. inflation. Therefore either it is from the micro level or the macro level, the U.S. benefits greatly. Therefore, the US's insistence on pushing forward the Section 301 investigation, releasing the so-called verdict and provoking the trade war will undoubtedly, primarily and directly harm the interests of the U.S. consumers, companies and enterprises and the financial market," said Hua.

Despite strong warnings from business groups and trade experts, U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a memorandum that could impose tariffs on up to 60 billion U.S. dollars of imports from China and restrictions on Chinese investment in the United States.

Soon after the announcement of the signing of the memorandum, U.S. stocks traded sharply lower.

"I think this is the financial market's vote of no confidence in the relevant wrong policies and actions of the United States. From one side, it also shows the international community's worry about the rashness and danger of the relevant policies and actions made by the United States," said Hua.

As for whether China will retaliate, Hua said China's stance has been made very clear.

"It's impolite not to make a return for what one receives, and we will fight to the end. We hope that the US side will take China's stance seriously, act with ration and caution, and do not be penny wise and pound foolish, which will hurt itself and others as well," said Hua.
