"Commercial movies currently take up a large portion of Chinese language films, that is why I really look forward to different film festivals like the Beijing International Film Festival that can help promote art films, the good film that are actually not broadly known. I hope the festival will encourage more talented film makers to shoot films depicting reality and art that could arouse some social repercussion or touch the heart of the audience."

Storyline

Members of the jury panel have voiced their expectations for the 8th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), with many hoping the event will provide an exchange platform for screen industry practitioners.

The judges of the festival's highest honor Tiantan Award shared their vision for the event at a press conference in Beijing on Friday.

Shu Qi, a veteran actress from China's Taiwan and only female judge on the panel, said she looks forward to more explorations of the part of art films that set out from different angles from commercial top grossers.

"Commercial movies currently take up a large portion of Chinese language films, that is why I really look forward to different film festivals like the Beijing International Film Festival that can help promote art films, the good film that are actually not broadly known. I hope the festival will encourage more talented film makers to shoot films depicting reality and art that could arouse some social repercussion or touch the heart of the audience," she said.

Duan Yihong, winner of the best actor award at the 2017 Tokyo International Film Festival, encouraged young directors to follow their passion and showcase their palpitating sentiment to the audience.

"What I value most is the fervor and heartbeat of young directors - it is not only what I regard as the most important, but also what I fear to lose the most," he said.

Jonathan Mostow, director of "Terminator 3," said he looks forward to more for sparkles from culture exchanges that could inspire people in the long run.

"We have movies coming from all over the world. We have film makers and audiences coming from all over the world. And now this is a forum to exchange new ideas. So, everybody hopefully who sees these films, myself included, will walk away with hopefully different perspectives on people and situations and cultures and new ideas. And in those sort of percolate, and then, may be five years from now, may be ten years from now, I have an idea for a movie that's influenced by something that I saw here," he said.

The eighth Beijing International Film Festival is slated to kick off in the Yanqi Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center in Huairou District on Sunday. A total of 15 films selected from 659 submissions across the world will be contending for the Tiantan Award.

The jury this year also includes Chinese director Wong Kar-wai, Swedish film director Ruben Ostlund, Berlin Golden Bear-winning filmmaker Calin Peter Netzer, and Oscar-winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek.

The film festival is gathering increasing global attentions thanks to the booming film market in China, which has the world's second largest film market, with box office sales of more than 55.9 billion yuan (about 8.9 billion U.S. dollars) in 2017.
