Storyline

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi co-chaired with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono the fourth Sino-Japanese high-level economic dialogue on Monday.

Wang said that the dialogue restarted when the bilateral relations have improved after eight years.

He said that China and Japan are facing new historical conditions and macroscopic environment and stand on a new starting point. The two sides should deepen their communication from both the strategic and pragmatic perspectives so as to enhance mutual understanding, accumulate mutual trust, promote coordination and push cooperation.

Wang pointed out that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up and, under the new situation, China has embarked on a new journey of reform and opening up in the new era. China and Japan are facing new historical opportunities in their economic and trade cooperation. The two sides should value this hard-to-get momentum of improvement to safeguard the political basis for the bilateral relations and persist in mutually beneficial win-win cooperation and common development. The two sides should build on the achievements in the Belt and Road cooperation and make them the new bright spots in the bilateral cooperation. The two sides should advance the process of the East Asian economic integration and make concerted efforts to oppose trade protectionism and build an open world economy.

Kono said that facing the new changes in the economic situation of the two countries and the world, Japan is willing to work together with China in planning and opening up new areas of cooperation from a new perspective.

He said that Japan attaches high importance to the important messages sent by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018, and as trade protectionism is raising its head, it is necessary to safeguard the free trade system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at the core.

At the dialogue, senior officials of foreign affairs and economic and finance departments of the two countries fully exchanged views on macroeconomic policies, bilateral economic cooperation and exchanges, cooperation with the third parties, the economic integration of East Asia, and the multilateral cooperation and achieved a series of consensuses.
