The two countries should regard each other as a cooperative partner, and put into practice the consensus of not being a threat, in order to make sure the bilateral ties develop steadily and further."

China hopes to make joint efforts with Japan to create a good atmosphere and sound conditions for promoting the high-level exchanges between the two countries, said Hua Chunying, spokeswoman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hua said that Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi started his visit to Japan on Monday and his visit is expected to become an important step to help bring China-Japan relations back to normal.

"Just as State Councilor Wang Yi said, the bilateral relations between China and Japan showed a momentum of improvement. Therefore, his visit, at the invitation of Japanese side, is a response to Japan's positive attitude towards China over a period of time. Wang expressed the hope that the visit could become an important step for the bilateral relations to return to normal and to create the conditions and make preparations for future high-level exchanges," said Hua.

"We hope that Japan would keep communicating with China and make concerted efforts to create a good atmosphere and sound conditions for the next step high-level contacts and create the conditions for promoting a sustainable improvement and development of the bilateral relations," said Hua.

Hua said China and Japan should follow their consensus and keep the bilateral relations going steadily and further.

"This year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. We hold that the two sides should observe the principles and consensus in the four statements signed by the two countries, have a correct approach to history and abide by the 'One-China Principle' so as to put in place the consensus of mutual cooperative partnership and mutually non-threatening and ensure the bilateral relations develop steadily and further," said Hua.

On the same day, Wang Yi co-chaired with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono the fourth Sino-Japanese high-level economic dialogue in Tokyo.

Wang Yi said that the dialog restarted when the bilateral relations have improved after eight years.
