The Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament, has decided to study a draft law on Russia's counter-sanctions against mainly the United States in May.
The State Duma council on Monday convened a special session, discussing the bill on "measures for influencing (countering) unfriendly actions by the U.S. and (or) other foreign states" which was submitted last Friday.
State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin on Monday told the press that the bill includes counter-measures against U.S. sanctions, but he did not elaborate. He said the council agreed that the bill needs discussion with experts.
The bill will be put to first reading in the lower house on May 15.
According to Russian media reports, the bill was drafted in response to the new round of U.S. sanctions announced on April 6. It proposes bans on the import of agricultural products, tobacco and alcohol from the United States and other countries participating in anti-Russian sanctions. It also proposes put restrictions on cooperation between Russia and these countries in the nuclear and rocket engine industries, as well as in the aircraft industry.
The White House said on Monday that the United States was considering imposing more sanctions on Russia and the decision will be made "in the near future." The announcement came one day after a senior U.S. official revealed that Washington was preparing to roll out a new round of sanctions on Moscow as early as Monday for its support of the Syrian government.
