Storyline

The Fact Finding Mission (FFM) of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has not yet deployed to Douma for security reasons, OPCW Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu said on Monday.

A session of the OPCW Executive Council convened on Monday at its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, to discuss the recent alleged chemical attack in Syria, which was said to have occurred in the rebel-held town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta on April 7.

According to Uzumcu, a team of nine experts has arrived in Damascus since last Saturday, but not yet deployed to Douma.

The Syrian and the Russian officials who participated in the preparatory meetings in Damascus have informed the FFM Team that there were still pending security issues to be worked out before any deployment could take place, said Uzumcu.

The emergency session started at 10:00 and lasted until 19:00. Envoys from OPCW member states voiced their opinions at the meeting.

Kenneth Ward, U.S. representative to the OPCW claimed that Russia may have tampered with the site of the alleged chemical attack. Russia's permanent representative Alexander Shulgin denied the allegation and promised that Russia would not interfere with the OPCW’s work in Syria.

The chemical weapons watchdog said its team is to verify whether there was a chemical attack on April 7, but not to identify who is held responsible for the attack.
