Storyline

China will continue proceedings against the United States according to the World Trade Organization (WTO)'s disputes settlement procedures, China's Ministry of Commerce said Thursday.

The ministry's spokesman Gao Feng made the remarks after the United States submitted a file to the WTO saying that it is willing to negotiate over the trade dispute with China.

The U.S. move follows WTO procedures, which order members to respond to a request for settlement from another member within 10 days, Gao said at a press conference.

China submitted the proceedings on related U.S. trade actions to the WTO on April 4 and April 5 respectively. Negotiation is a necessary procedure.

"On April 13, the U.S. permanent ambassador to WTO wrote to the Chinese permanent ambassador to WTO, saying the United States is willing to negotiate over the proceedings from China. China will continue the proceedings against the United States according to WTO's disputes settlement procedures," said Gao.

Gao reiterated that U.S. Section 232 and Section 301 measures to slap tariffs on Chinese products seriously violate the WTO rules.

"I want to stress that the U.S. measure of announcing the proposed tariff list on Chinese products according to its Section 301 has totally disregarded the multilateral rules, and is typical unilateralism and trade protectionism. The two sides have not yet held any bilateral talks over the U.S. Section 301 investigation and the proposed U.S. tariff list on Chinese goods," said the spokesman.
