Storyline

China will firmly continue its reform and opening-up, and oppose unilateralism and trade protectionism, said a spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday.

Gao Feng, the spokesman, made the remarks at a press conference in response to the report saying the United States will release the list of 100-billion-U.S.-dollar taxable Chinese products at the soonest next week.

"China will firmly continue its reform and opening up. China is determined and has full confidence in opposing unilateralism and trade protectionism. Trade conflict can not only harm the interest of U.S. workers but also that of the consumers," said Gao.

Gao added that China doesn't want to see the escalation of a trade conflict, but is prepared for all kinds of possibilities. If the United States clings obstinately to its own course, China will fight back resolutely until the very end.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced at the beginning of April that he had asked the U.S. Trade Representative to consider additional tariffs for 100 billion U.S. dollars' worth of Chinese products.

China then responded that it would fight back resolutely without any hesitation if the U.S. announces a list of Chinese products subject to additional tariffs.
