"This year is the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx. And for Trier, it's a very very important date because lots of the ideas of Karl Marx had their foundation in the city of Trier. Later on when Marx worked about the money theory, he said, for example, that it's better to abolish money in total, and at the same time, it's quite interesting to bring this zero-euro bank note."

Storyline

The hometown of Karl Marx, German city of Trier, recently released commemorative zero-euro bank notes to celebrate his 200th birthday on May 5.

The bank notes cost three euros and are actually souvenirs though they look like genuine euros with Marx's portrait in the front and European landscape in the back.

Norbert Kaethler, managing director of Trier's tourism office, said the release of the notes is to play on Marx's criticism of capitalism.

"This year is the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx. And for Trier, it's a very very important date because lots of the ideas of Karl Marx had their foundation in the city of Trier. Later on when Marx worked about the money theory, he said, for example, that it's better to abolish money in total, and at the same time, it's quite interesting to bring this zero-euro bank note," he said.

Besides selling the zero-euro notes, the city will also launch 300 activities to celebrate the anniversary this year.

"Now there are like 300 different lectures and information evenings about it, so we get in contact with it and how Karl Marx lived here, how he was born, how he was raised, how he got in contact with other people. And it's really nice to know that he is still kind of affecting us today," said a resident.

The city will also unveil a bronze stature of Marx presented by China as a gift to the great thinker's hometown on May 5 to mark the beginning of the commemoration activities.
