Storyline

Nicaraguans woke up Saturday after a night of clashes and vandalism that left at least seven dead, bringing the total number of victims to 10 in the protests against planned social security reforms since Wednesday.

Nicaraguan Army troops were deployed Saturday morning around the mayor's office in Managua to protect those offices, according to official sources. Soldiers were also sent to the city of Esteli - some 149 kilometers north of Managua to guard public institutions.

The Ministry of Youth (Ministerio de la Juventud) in Managua, the State University Center of the National University (CUUN) in the city of Leon, and the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) house in Masaya were some of the buildings that came under the attack, according to official sources.

On Saturday, the city of Managua experienced a tense calm, with remains of burnt tires, stones and debris scattered along the streets and riot police in the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua (UPOLI) and the National University of Engineering (UNI) neighborhoods.

The violence since Wednesday has already claimed the lives of at least 10 people, in addition to more than a hundred injured, according to official data from the Nicaraguan Red Cross.

The violent demonstrations were triggered from the new social security measures, which advanced by the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security (INSS), establish an increase in contribution and a deduction of five percent from pensions.
