Some of them shouted about a chemical attack, some of them sprayed water, the situation at that time was pretty chaotic and out of our control, because it was too crowded at the scene, and many of the people were patients, so we couldn't control the situation in the emergency room."

Storyline

Medics and local residents of the Syrian town of Douma, where an alleged chemical attack was said to have taken place on April 7, said on Saturday that they did not find any casualties caused by chemical weapons on that day.

Malik Al-Najjar, a doctor of a local hospital that treated the injured people in the suspected chemical attack, said the patients he treated did not show symptoms of chemical poisoning.

"Smoke or dust was the reason for their acute asthma. We treated these patients who were suffering from acute asthma, but their symptoms were not related to chemical poisoning," said Al-Najjar.

The allegation of a chemical attack was spread by a group of unidentified people, according to a nurse of the hospital named Yasser.

"It was quite dusty. There were many injured people being admitted. Among them were those who were injured in the war, those who suffered aspiration problems due to smoke and dust. Some people who wore masks came to the hospital, they are not medics, they came from outside the hospital. Some of them shouted about a chemical attack, some of them sprayed water, the situation at that time was pretty chaotic and out of our control, because it was too crowded at the scene, and many of the people were patients, so we couldn't control the situation in the emergency room," said Yasser.

Another nurse named Osama blamed opposition organizations for spreading the rumor.

"We all know that one of the major symptoms for chemical poisoning is that the patent's pupils will dilate. We alway remember that at work. I checked the patients' pupils, they didn't have this symptom. At that time some people shouted about a chemical attack, they are not the hospital's staff, they are probably from the White Helmets," said Osama.

In addition to medical workers, local residents and eyewitnesses also denied the chemical attack.

"We knew each other because we have been living here together. I have never heard that anyone was attacked by a chemical weapon or died from a chemical attack," said a local resident at the hospital.

"The Syria Civil Defense [White Helmets] or the Army of Islam did that, they have ruined this country," said a young man outside the hospital.
