Longji Rice Terraces, as part of Rice Terraces System in Southern Mountainous and Hilly Areas of China, has been officially recognized as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) sites during the GIAHS international forum held in Rome, Italy on Thursday.
Located at Longsheng County in Guilin City of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Longji Rice Terraces display Chinese traditional agricultural civilization which has lasted for thousands of years.
Longsheng Longji (literally dragon's back) Terraces gains its name because the mountain resembles a dragon's back. It originated at least 2,300 years ago. The total area is 1174 hectares and the highest point reaches 1200 meters above sea level, with a maximum vertical drop of about 860 meters.
In Longji Rice Terraces, natural environment and local culture are perfectly mixed. Because of both the local farmers' efforts for conservation and the limited size of terrace fields, the traditional cultivation has been well preserved. The worship of mountain gods protects the forest above the terraces. The water resources have also been reasonably distributed and efficiently used. The rice terraces, forests, water system and village show a harmonious relationship between human and nature.
Growing rice used to be the only income for local farmers because of the inconveniently placed land. Now, farmers in Longji Rice Terraces have put effort into developing a tourism industry, which has brought huge change to their lives. The breathtaking Longji Rice Terraces, showing different sceneries in different seasons, have attracted visitors from China and all over the world.
