Storyline

Chinese PLA navy has quickened its steps to grow into a world leading naval force in the past six years that is capable of both offshore waters defense and open sea escort, after its first aircraft carrier Liaoning went into commission in 2012.

Chinese navy formation featuring the aircraft carrier Liaoning participated in a series of trainings in the South China Sea and the West Pacific after the parade in South China Sea region on April 12, testing the building and the application of the navy’s combat system, and abilities of breaking out from submarine ambush, taking sea control and air supremacy in high seas, and commanding in a combat-like environment.

On Nov. 23, 2012 pilot Dai Mingmeng drove a J-15 fighter jet and landed on the deck of aircraft carrier Liaoning, making breakthroughs of the ski-jump and arrested landing, only two months after Liaoning entered into service.

During the last ten days of December in 2015, when the aircraft carrier was conducting a drill with its shipborne fighter jets at north China's Bohai Bay, a group pilots of carrier-based J-15 fighter jets completed several trainings such as takeoff after touchdown and arrested landing.

On Dec. 15, 2016, the aircraft carrier Liaoning took part in a drill that real weapons were used. Several missiles were launched by the aircraft carrier and J-15 fighter jet, and hit targets accurately. This is the first time that weapons were used in the drill after its service. Groups of pilots were awarded with qualification certificates.

"By using real weapons, it involves the whole system, the whole process and the whole elements of the entire formation. In other words, the overall ability of the formation was showed by the drill. By the test of using weapons, it can show the condition of this formation’s war power and fighting capacity generation," said Chen Yueqi, a commander of Chinese navy formation.

Ten days after the training, the aircraft carrier passed the Miyako Strait to the West Pacific, the first time that formation went beyond the first island chain to carry out a cross-district high-sea training.

In its six-year service, the aircraft carrier Liaoning has fulfilled hundreds of tests and trainings.

"Currently, we have fulfilled all trainings listed in the aircraft carrier formation training program and have conducted several live-fire drills that involves all systems, elements and process of the formation, confrontation drills and cross-district high-sea maneuver trainings. As a result, all elements of the formation are integrated deeply. We can work closely, command smoothly, and operate efficiently. We are equipped with a strong ability of three-dimensional perception, an assault ability at sea and in air, and the comprehensive defense ability," said Chen.
