Storyline

Residents of the Republic of Korea (ROK) have great expectations about the upcoming meeting between their president Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un, the top leader of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), which is scheduled for April 27.

Eleven years after then ROK President Roh Moo-hyun held talks with Kim Jong Il, former leader of the DPRK in 2007, many people are eagerly anticipating the meeting and hope it can become a new starting point in resolving the long-standing disputes on the Korean Peninsula.

A giant poster has been hung outside Seoul's City Hall building depicting two hands shaking in an apparent sign of unity, indicating people's best wishes for a peaceful Korean Peninsula. The lawn outside has also been redecorated, with white flowers making up an image of the Korean Peninsula.

Many residents have come to take photos by the City Hall and are positive about Friday's meeting.

"I hope the leaders can talk more about development of ROK-DPRK relations at the meeting. They can give us an explicit answer to the problem of reunions of separated families. I hope the separated families can reunite sooner this year," said a resident in the ROK capital.

"Before, the relations between the ROK and the DPRK were poor. I hope this meeting can serve as an opportunity to bring peace to the Peninsula, and contribute to a good result of talks between the U.S. and the DPRK. I hope the relations of the DPRK, the ROK, the U.S., China and other neighboring countries can further develop and produce a result that can satisfy every party," said another Seoul resident.

Despite the high expectations, many admitted it is hard to achieve reunification of the ROK and the DPRK in the short term. The meeting might just lay foundations towards a more peaceful environment on the Peninsula.

"The meetings in 2000 and 2007 were focused on promoting relations between the ROK and the DPRK. This time the talks will also cover that topic. But the main topic will be denuclearization in the DPRK, getting systematic assurances from the U.S., and preparing for meetings between leaders of the DPRK and the U.S.," said Kim Jin-su, a current affairs commentator for the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS).
