China appeals to the international community to safeguard and promote the authority, validity and universality of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as globalization is advancing, said a senior Chinese diplomat on Monday.
Fu Cong, the Chinese ambassador for disarmament, made the remarks at the second preparatory meeting for the 2020 Review Conference to the NPT in Geneva, Switzerland.
At the general debate, Fu pointed out the NPT faces many challenges including many different nuclear disarmament paths, double standards on the issues of nuclear non-proliferation, as well as a lack of trust and management in the international security field.
He stressed that China advocates consistently adhering to the purpose and principle of the NPT, safeguarding the multilateralism, and resorting to dialogue and consultation to handle disagreements.
Four proposals were raised by the Chinese ambassador at the meeting, including respecting the legitimate security concerns of all countries, respecting the trend of the times for peaceful development, respecting the treaty mechanism, and respecting the outcome of the treaty review.
"More and more countries support and welcome China's policies and ideas. We hope other nuclear countries hold the same stance and make their efforts to reduce [the threat of] nuclear wars," said Fu after the meeting.
Speaking of the U.S. likely withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, the Chinese ambassador emphasized the importance of the 2015 agreement.
"We hope all parties, especially the U.S., will listen to the voice of the international community, because we believe the Iran nuclear deal is an important milestone of the international efforts in the non-proliferation process," he said.
Fu also welcomed the latest development on the Korean Peninsula after the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced it would stop nuclear and missile tests from April 21.
In 2017, the NPT marked the first meeting of the five-year cycle of its 10th Review Conference in 2020, the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the treaty's coming into force.
