Storyline

Divided by a war almost seven decades ago that ended in a truce, the two Koreas on each side of the 38th parallel are beefing up preparations for an ice-breaking summit scheduled for Friday.

With the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announcing the suspension of its nuclear and missile tests and the Republic of Korea (ROK) proposing to ink a peace agreement that formally ends the stalemate following the 1950-53 Korean War, the world has welcomed these reconciliatory gestures leading up to the summit, for which expectations are high.

The Peace House on the South Korean side of Panmunjom, a village at the Demilitarized Zone, has been chosen as the site of Friday's summit, making Kim Jong Un, the first DPRK leader, to step onto ROK soil after the Korean War, although the distance between the demarcation line and the Peace House is only several hundred meters.

In addition to the DPRK's efforts in easing confrontation, the ROK, for its part, has also been busy preparing for the much-anticipated summit, which observers say will also lay the groundwork for the planned Trump-Kim talks.

Some government advisors in the ROK hoped that the talks can be held at the Demilitarized Zone.

"I want it to happen in Panmunjom. We hope the inter-Korean summit will provide a new occasion for peace at the place that is the knife's edge of the conflict," said Jin Chang Soo, president of the Sejong Institute.

Tourists were seen visiting a small section of the Demilitarized Zone last week, though always under a watchful eye.

There is plenty to see like an old bunker, now an artsy information center promoting the ROK government's key message.

There are also monuments to families torn apart by the Korean War.

Nearby ribbons hang on the wire, placed there by people wishing for reunification.
