1. Lu Kang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, speaking
2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Lu Kang, spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry:
"We appreciate that the United States is willing to talk about abiding by the WTO rules. If you pay attention to the relevant discussions at the WTO headquarters in Geneva these days, you may see how eagerly the broad members of the organization wish the United States to abide by the WTO rules, and genuinely uphold the WTO-centered multilateral trading system. As for whether China has followed the WTO rules, we'd appreciate it if the U.S. side could present some concrete evidence suppose it really holds that China has violated a certain rule."
3. Press conference in progress
4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Lu Kang, spokesman of China's Foreign Ministry:
"Whether or not a member truly observes the WTO rules should only be judged within the framework of the WTO rather than by a certain member. In fact, China has performed its obligations and strictly followed the WTO rules since its entry to the organization. China has always been an active participator, a staunch supporter and an important contributor to the multilateral trade. Actually, China's remarkable achievements are nothing but the results of its adherence to the WTO rules and hard work of the Chinese people. As I said yesterday, it's not strange to see some trade and economic rifts between China and the United States, which can be settled through consultations and negotiations, or addressed within a commonly recognized multilateral framework. But it's impossible to have any unilateral means to settle them."

Storyline

China has followed the WTO rules truly since its entry to the organization, said Lu Kang, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

Lu made the remarks in response to the statement made by U.S. Consul General of Hong Kong and Macao Kurt Tong on Tuesday, who said that China's breaches of WTO rules are detrimental to the United States and China's success in economic development is leading to its disregard of the global rules.

Lu said it's a shared aspiration among the WTO members that the United States should abide by the WTO rules.
