The loading of fuel on the world's first AP1000 nuclear power unit has begun in a new nuclear power station in east China's Zhejiang Province.
The process to put 157 sets of fuel assemblies into the nuclear reactor core in the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station started on Wednesday evening and is scheduled to last three to four days, according to engineers.
When the fuel-loading is completed, a series of tests, including pre-criticality test, the first criticality test, the first on-grid test and the power ascension test will be conducted.
AP1000 is a third generation reactor with a designed operational life of 60 years, and capable of generating 1.25 million kilowatts of electricity. It's much safer than its predecessors now in operation with much improved economic efficiency.
The first phase construction of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station started on April 19, 2009. Under construction now are its first and second units.
