Storyline

China hopes that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) could sustain the tension-easing momentum on the Korean Peninsula, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

Lu said the situation on the Korean Peninsula is moving toward dialog and amelioration, and the hard-won situation accords with the common interests of all parties, as well as the expectations of the international community.

Lu's remarks came after the DPRK state media said early Wednesday that Pyongyang would suspend high-level talks with the ROK scheduled for May 16 and threatened to withdraw from a scheduled meeting with the United States over an ongoing U.S.-ROK joint military exercise.

China also hopes the DPRK and the ROK will follow the spirit of the Panmunjom Declaration, understand and respect each other's reasonable concerns to build mutual trust and improve ties, Lu said.

"The current situation of amelioration on the Peninsula is worth to cherish by all relevant parties. We support and hope that both sides of the DPRK and the ROK will follow the spirit of dialog, reconciliation and cooperation embodied in the Panmunjom Declaration, fully show their respect for each other's reasonable concerns, work toward the same direction, build mutual trust and improve ties," Lu said.

Lu called on the parties concerned to avoid taking steps that would worsen the situation. He also called for creating favorable conditions for dialog and consultations.

"To sustain and consolidate the current tension-easing momentum on the Peninsula, all relevant parties should show goodwills to each other and avoid taking actions to provoke one another and trigger tensions. This is the way that we believe could create a good atmosphere necessary for a political settlement for the Peninsula issue through talks," Lu said.
