Storyline

The 2018 Global Unicorn Enterprise Forum was held on Saturday in Chengdu of southwest China's Sichuan Province, gathering representatives from some 100 "unicorns" - startups valued at one billion dollars or more - from around the world.

The number of unicorn companies has been taken as an important indicator of economic development. Currently, China has 35 percent of the world unicorns, second only to the United States. Most of the Chinese unicorns are in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Shenzhen, with other cities like Chengdu, Wuhan, Xi'an and Nanjing trying to attract and nurture their own unicorns with increased policy support and a better business environment.

"This actually shows that unicorns have entered the economic field as a new force, which is a very important signal. It will boost confidence of all of us innovative companies, especially those in technology and model innovation, and give us a better environment for exchanges," said Li Tao, founder and CEO of Chinese mobile internet startup APUS.

The forum released a list of 60 widely-accepted unicorns and 60 "gazelle" companies,or small publicly traded companies having an annual growth rate of 20 percent or more in sales revenue.

"These young 'unicorns' or 'foals' at the beginning of their long journey are in pursuit of their 'forest'. We want to have a sound environment where we can demonstrate our own capacity and promote new demands with our new technologies," said Guo Liang, CEO of AOSSCI, a Sichuan-based smart unmanned aircraft system developer.

"Maybe China can give more flexibility and space to startups developing toward 'unicorns'," echoed Lei Yu, vice president for public affairs at Yunniao Technologies Co. Ltd.
