Storyline

China’s box office revenue totaled 20.22 billion yuan (3.17 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter of 2018, overtaking that of North America for the first time.

The country's box office takings have reached 27.28 billion yuan (4.28 billion U.S. dollars) as of Saturday since the beginning of this year, up 26.74 percent compared with the same time period one year earlier, according to official statistics.

Among the top ten box-office hits from January to March, seven are domestic blockbusters that have been dubbed “movie theater backbones”, including the Operation Red Sea, Amazing China.

Chinese movie makers say they will focus more on movies telling Chinese people’s stories to create both economic and social values.

"We should depict modern Chinese people’s style and characteristics in a more heartfelt manner in our camera work," said Yu Dong, producer of the Operation Red Sea.

A public poll shows that Chinese cinema goers rated 83.4 points and 81 points for the movies premiered during the Spring Festival from January to late February and the “post-festival” time period from late February to March.

"The good movies have fully displayed their quality and charisma, and the mainstream values have been warmly recognized by the youth, I think this is the most important thing," said Zhou Xing, a member of China’s State Film Censorship Board.
