Storyline

China's latest maglev train prototype, which can travel at a speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour, passed its running test in Changcha City, central China's Hubei Province on Wednesday.

The prototype, co-designed by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) Tangshan Co., Ltd., the National University of Defense Technology and other partners, is a fifth-generation maglev train that relies on contact-less magnetic and floats 8 millimeters above the rails.

It took the developers 38 years to finish developing the four generations of low- and medium-speed maglev trains. The fourth-generation maglev train has already been put into operation in Beijing.

With proprietary intellectual property rights, developing the fifth-generation maglev train has paved way for the developers to move to their next step - developing the next-generation maglev train capable of running at 200 kilometers per hour.

According to information released by the CCRC, the fifth-generation train adopts composite materials for its carriage roof, which makes the carriage lighter and helps to optimize the traction system's performance.

Maglev train is mainly used in metro transit routes linking neighboring cities or urban areas with satellite towns.
