Storyline

Experts from 28 countries gathered in Beijing on Wednesday to share China’s experience on poverty reduction at the 2018 China Poverty Reduction International Forum.

At the forum, guests launched a program to solicit best poverty reduction practices around the global.

China has been a frontrunner in poverty reduction, having alleviated a significant number of people from below the poverty line.

Several platforms, such as the Global Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Growth Portal, were set up to promote knowledge sharing on poverty alleviation.

With an abundant amount of data on poverty reduction, the platforms give the international community a chance to exchange ideas and experiences.

"Sharing experience between countries which are facing the same challenges, sharing the experience, in this case, of China with other developing countries, we want to get an inspiration. We want to get a direction of how China succeeded in making this remarkable achievement in lifting 800 million people out of poverty,” said Vincent Martin, representative in China and DPRK from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Martin said poverty conditions in each developing country are diverse and need to be treated in a case-by-case manner.

The Chinese government has worked hard to share with the rest of the world the lessons the country has learned in poverty alleviation.

A book, titled “The Way Forward”, collects stories of poverty alleviation in China. It can show the way forward for countries that want to help their poor people.

"Poverty is one element of human rights. If people are poor, then it is against the UN Convention of Human Rights. So it is very necessary for nations to reduce poverty of local community,” said Noel Dakamau, Malawi Human Resource Management Officer.

The financial sector has been involved in helping developing countries achieve their goals. The Asian Development Bank is committed to advancing South-South knowledge sharing.

"What we are looking really with financial institutions is to develop the kind of collaborative partnerships through co-financing, but also knowledge partnerships that can allow the private sector intermediated by financial institutions to come to build this process as well,” said Benedict Bingham, director in China from Asian Development Bank.
