Republic of Korea (ROK) President Moon Jae-in said Sunday that both top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump wished the success of their summit "wholeheartedly."
Moon made the statement at a briefing after holding a surprise summit with Kim Saturday on the DPRK side of the border village of Panmunjom.
Moon said Kim reaffirmed his commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to a planned meeting with Trump, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore.
Moon said that the latest summit was held at request of Kim.
The two leaders agree to hold summit talks whenever necessary, Moon noted during the conference, adding that the summit must be held successfully.
Moon also said that the intended U.S.-DPRK summit depends on future negotiations.
Moon and Kim met at the truce village of Panmunjom inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ) on May 26 from 15:00 to 17:00 local time. The two-hour meeting came up one month after the first inter-Korean summit, where they declared to work toward a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
The two leaders' meeting came days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his reconsideration of the planned U.S.-DPRK summit in Singapore, just a day after he called it off.
