China on Sunday welcomes the progress made through reconciliation and cooperation between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Republic of Korea (ROK), according to a Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Chinese foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang made the remarks when commenting on the just-concluded second meeting between ROK President Moon Jae-in and top leader of the DPRK Kim Jong Un as well as the statement made by the U.S.President Donald Trump on late Saturday that he is "looking forward at June 12 in Singapore" after he called off the meeting with Kim on Thursday.
Lu said that China welcomes and supports the DPRK and ROK to implement the consensus reached between the two leaders in the spirit of dialogue, reconciliation and cooperation embodied in the Panmunjom Declaration and continue to push reconciliation and cooperation and make continuous efforts to build up mutual trust, improve bilateral ties through dialogue and consultation so as to play a positive role in maintaining and consolidating the momentum of easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
China always believes that direct contact and dialogue between DPRK and U.S.leaders is the key to solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Lu said.
China expects the DPRK and the U.S. to cherish the latest trend toward dialogue and ease of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, be patient, show goodwill to each other and continue to work together to address each other's major concerns through dialogue and consultation in order to push forward the denuclearization of the Peninsula, said the foreign ministry spokesman.
China firmly supports the meeting between leaders from the DPRK and the U.S. and hopes that the meeting will be held as scheduled and wish it a success which will bring peace to the Peninsula and good news to the world, according to the spokesman.
China, as a close neighbor, always adheres to the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, stays committed to safeguarding peace and stability of the Peninsula, and insists on settlement of the Korean Peninsula issues through dialogue and consultation, said Lu, adding that the Chinese side will continue to play an active and constructive role in addressing the issues.
