Storyline

A team of conservationists had a pleasant surprise on Tuesday when they spotted a wild giant panda cub clinging to a tree in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The landmark discovery is the first time a wild giant panda has been sighted in the reserve's Zhadaokou district.

According to conservation team members, the group had been taking a rest from collecting DNA samples of wild pandas in the district when pieces of bark fell on them. Looking up, they were amazed to see a panda cub hanging onto the tree branches above them.

The cub was estimated to be around seven months old and weighed approximately 20 kilograms. The experts believe the young panda's mother may have been wandering in the area nearby.

Besides spotting a baby panda, the conservation team members also found large quantities of bamboo, showing how the district is highly habitable for the pandas.

Partly down to the difficulties caused by the steep mountainous terrain of the Zhadaokou district, no sightings of giant pandas have been recorded during the team's previous visits, making Tuesday's discovery all the more significant.
