"China holds that the only correct orientation in resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is political settlement by peaceful means and through dialogue. Resolving this issue, of course, requires denuclearization and complete denuclearization at that and, at the same time, requires the establishment of a peace mechanism on the Peninsula and addressing DPRK's reasonable security concerns. I think no one doubts China's unique and important role in this process and China will continue this role."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Geng Shuang, spokesman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (starting with shot 4):
"China has been firm in its commitment to the denuclearization on the Peninsula. At the same time, we hold that it is necessary to heed and address DPRK's reasonable security concerns during the process of promoting the denuclearization on the Peninsula. Currently, the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue is exactly following the dual-track approach proposed by China. With the positive progress in denuclearization, parties concerned should establish a peace mechanism on the Peninsula and adopt positive measures to address DPRK's security concerns and China will continue its constructive role in this process."

7. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Geng Shuang, spokesman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"As a major party to the Peninsula affairs and a signatory party to the Korean Armistice Agreement, China is duty-bound and obliged to play its due role in realizing the mechanism of shifting from armistice to peace on the Peninsula. China will continue to take an active part in the process of peace on the Korean Peninsula and make its due contributions to the denuclearizaiton on the Peninsula and to building a peace mechanism on the Peninsula and safeguarding peace and stability of the Peninsula."

Storyline

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China welcomes and supports the meeting between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Singapore on Tuesday, adding that China will continue playing a constructive role in promoting the denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang, also China's state councilor, made the remarks in response to China's role in the historic meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un.

The two leaders are creating a new history by ending the half-century antagonism, Wang said.

Wang noted that the essence of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is the issue of security and what is the most important in resolving the predicament is that the United States and the DPRK should sit down and seek a way out through dialogue on an equal footing and China has over the past more than two decades dedicated to promoting and realizing this process.

Wang said: "China holds that the only correct orientation in resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is political settlement by peaceful means and through dialogue. Resolving this issue, of course, requires denuclearization and complete denuclearization at that and, at the same time, requires the establishment of a peace mechanism on the Peninsula and addressing DPRK's reasonable security concerns."

"I think no one doubts China's unique and important role in this process and China will continue this role," Wang added.

On Tuesday afternoon, spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Geng Shuang made similar remarks concerning China's role in promoting the denuclearization on the Peninsula.

With the positive progress in denuclearization, parties concerned should establish a peace mechanism on the Peninsula and adopt positive measures to address DPRK's security concerns and China will continue its constructive role in this process," Geng said.

"As a major party to the Peninsula affairs and a signatory party to the Korean Armistice Agreement," Geng said, "China is duty-bound and obliged to play its due role in realizing the mechanism of shifting from armistice to peace on the Peninsula."

"China will continue to take an active part in the process of peace on the Korean Peninsula and make its due contributions to the denuclearizaiton on the Peninsula and to building a peace mechanism on the Peninsula and safeguarding peace and stability of the Peninsula," he said.
