Storyline


A ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary of the birth of Chinese TV series was held on Tuesday at the 24th Shanghai International Television Festival.

The event called "Keeping Pace With the Times" was hosted by the State Administration of Radio and Television of China and saluted the excellent people in China's TV series industry.

Reviewing the past 60 years of the development of Chinese TV series, the event also encouraged the television people to have firm confidence in Chinese culture and create better works for the never-ending "Chinese Theater".

China's TV series industry have boomed over the past 40 years of reform and opening-up and a large number of popular classics have been made.

The TV series by China Central Television (CCTV) of the "Four Great Classic Novels" of China, namely, Journey to the West, Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin have all become classic memories of the audience.

"It was 30 years ago. With one camera, we traveled all over China and made 41 episodes in 17 years. This China's first mythology TV series produced by CCTV and China Television Production Center(CTPC)has formed ties of affection with several generations of the audience," said Zhang Jinlai, also known as Liu Xiao Ling Tong, the actor of the Monkey King in the 1986 edition of Journey to the West.

The creation of Chinese TV series in the new era has been focusing on realism themes since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012.

Mao Weining, a director who have made a number of realism-themed TV series, said that he will continue to take roots in life and produce more excellent works.

"The insistence of realism creation techniques not only is a simple copy of real life, but also blends in the thoughts, styles, personalities and unique life experience of us creators. It needs us creators' unique aesthetic standards. Especially in a more diverse world nowadays, I think China's TV series particularly needs clear realism works," said Mao.

China's first TV series One Mouthful of Vegetable Cake was broadcast at the then Beijing TV Station on June 15, 1958.
