Taiwan authorities will further harm cross-Strait ties by leaning onto foreign forces to buoy themselves up, said a mainland spokesman on Wednesday.

Spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office Ma Xiaoguang made the response when asked to comment on a U.S. official's attendance at a dedication ceremony of a new office complex of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) on Tuesday.

"The Chinese Foreign Ministry has lodged stern representations with the United States. China firmly opposes any official exchange or contact between the United States and Taiwan. The U.S. should honor the one-China principle and three China-U.S. joint communiques, so as not to hurt the China-U.S. relations and cross-Strait peace and stability. Taiwan authorities will only further harm cross-Strait ties by leaning onto foreign forces to buoy themselves up," said Ma.

According to reports, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Culture Affairs Marie Royce on Tuesday attended the dedication ceremony of the new AIT office complex.
