Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for protection for cultural heritage and ecology during an inspection tour in east China's Shandong Province.

On Tuesday afternoon, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, went to Weihai City, where he visited an ancient fort of the Beiyang Navy and the Museum of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895.

Xi said history should be remembered and lessons should be drawn from the history. He called for joint efforts by the 1.3 billion Chinese people to build a better and stronger China.

Xi also visited an ecological restoration project conducted by the Huaxia Group that has turned a stark quarry into a scenic spot with green trees and colorful flowers over the past decade.

He gave positive comments on the group's efforts to help increase local villagers' incomes by promoting tourism through the ecological restoration project. He stressed that a good economic environment is an important foundation for the healthy development of the economy and the society.

Xi called on the people to establish the notion that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets, and to act with resolve and intensity as never before to strengthen environmental protection so as to build China into a green and beautiful country.

On Wednesday morning, Xi went to Penglai City, a starting point of the ancient maritime silk road, where he overlooked the whole city while climbing up Penglai Pavilion, and listened to the story of Qi Jiguang (1528-1588), a military general of the Ming dynasty, who is best known for leading the defense on the coastal regions against wokou pirate activities in the 16th century.

Xi pointed out that China's ancient, modern and contemporary history are valuable treasure of the Chinese nation and called on Chinese officials to learn more about the Chinese history and learn from it. He also called for protection for important national cultural relics so that they can be passed down from generation to generation.

Xi's inspection came after he attended the 18th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Qingdao City from June 9 to 10.
