The 2018 China Longzhou (Dragon Boat) Tournament kicked off its fifth leg in Fuzhou City of east China's Fujian Province on Sunday, coincides with China's traditional Duanwu Festival holiday.
The Duanwu Festival, or the Dragon Boat Festival, comes on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This year, it falls on Monday.
In Fuzhou, 45 competitive dragon boat teams and 20 traditional dragon boat teams will fight for champions in 100 meters, 200 meters and 500 meters race.
This year the tournament keeps professional men's race, youth race for men and women, while canceling professional women's race and adding elite men's race and mixed open race.
Fuzhou is the fifth leg of this year's tournament. The first four were held in the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, Hunan and Jiangsu.
The Longzhou Tournament,first held in 2011, is the top-level dragon boat race in China.
The annual event attracted not only dragon boat fans from home, but also those from Malaysia, Russia and other countries. The participants are from all walks of life, from farmers to fishermen, from university students to researchers at all ages.
The tournament is held in different cities and each team accumulates its scores gained at each race. The team with the highest score can claim the champion.
Dragon boats are a reflection of ancient Chinese culture in worshiping and entertaining. They are connected to the Duanwu Festival, during which people have dragon boat races across the country.
Now more than 80 countries and regions organize dragon boat races in the world.
