A spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Tuesday that if the United States loses its rationality and unveils another list of Chinese products to be subjected to additional tariffs, China has no choice but resolutely strike back by taking comprehensive measures combining quantitative and qualitative ones.
The spokesman made the statement in response to the U.S. plan to impose tariffs on Chinese goods worth around 50 billion U.S. dollar and threaten to identify 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of more Chinese products for additional tariffs.
Such practice of maximum pressure and blackmailing runs contrary to the consensus the two sides have reached through rounds of consultations, and disappoints the international community, the spokesman said.
By waging a trade war, the United States has violated the market law and run counter to the development trend of the present-day world. It undermines the interests not only of the Chinese but also of the American people. China has launched countermeasures for the purpose of safeguarding and defending the interests of the country and the people and also the free trade system and the common interests of humanity, said the spokesman.
No matter how the external environment changes, China will, following its established rhythm, be firm in going ahead with its reform and opening up and with its high-quality development and in accelerating the building of a modern economic system, said the spokesman.
