China welcomes France to join Belt and Road Initiative: FM

"The Chinese side has noticed the report released by the French Senate, and we appreciate and welcome France’s proactive willingness to join the Belt and Road Initiative. The Belt and Road Initiative is an open and inclusive program for international cooperation, and follows the principle of joint contribution, wide consultation and shared benefits so that all nations involved can play their role and benefit from it. In concrete cooperation, we attach great importance to making all the parities comfortable, keep open and transparent, and follow recognized international norms and rules. We're ready to work with European countries, France included, to discuss specific means to cooperate within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, coordinate our development strategies, expand shared interests so as to secure a higher level of mutual benefit and win-win result."

China welcomes France to take part in the Belt and Road Initiative, said a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a regular briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

Geng Shuang, the spokesman, told reporters that the Chinese side has noted the French Senate's report over the China-proposed Initiative.

"We appreciate and welcome France’s proactive willingness to join the Belt and Road Initiative," he said.

The Belt and Road Initiative refers to the proposal to build a Silk Road Economic Belt and a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It focus on promoting policy coordination, connectivity of facilities, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and strengthened people-to-people ties among China and the related countries.

Geng stressed the inclusive nature of the program.

"The Belt and Road Initiative is an open and inclusive program for international cooperation, and follows the principle of joint contribution, wide consultation and shared benefits so that all nations involved can play their role and benefit from it. In concrete cooperation, we attach great importance to making all the parities comfortable, keep open and transparent, and follow recognized international norms and rules," said Geng.

The spokesman said China is ready to discuss with France on cooperation details.

"We're ready to work with European countries, France included, to discuss specific means to cooperate within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, coordinate our development strategies, expand shared interests so as to secure a higher level of mutual benefit and win-win result," he said.

The French Senate published an evaluation report of the Initiative, the first of its kind by the European country, on June 12. In the report, it calls for France to play a positive role in the Initiative.
